proud to be supporting the Campbeltown Picture House
Centenary Project.
The Picture
House is one of the oldest cinemas in the UK and has been
showing films for one hundred years. It is at the heart of
the community and is now run as a charity. We would like to
encourage runners to raise funds for this local charity. The

Macmillan
Cancer Support |
|
 |
|
Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people
affected by cancer. We are a source of support: providing
practical, medical, emotional and financial support. We are
a force for change: listening to people affected by cancer
and working together for better cancer care. One in three of
us will get cancer. Two million of us are living with it. We
are all affected by cancer. We can all help. We are
Macmillan.
We have Macmillan Professionals based throughout various
hospitals, hospices and advice centres in the West of
Scotland including two community clinical nurse specialists
based at Campbeltown hospital. These teams of Macmillan
Professionals work alongside GP’s, consultants and District
Nurses to offer the best specialist knowledge and care
possible throughout the surrounding communities.
Macmillan Cancer Support provides up to date information
and support to anyone who is affected by cancer.
People are able to access information via our CancerLine
telephone service, our website and through a range of
leaflets, posters and guides or through our information
centres. Macmillan helps signpost people through the system
and, crucially, giving them a dedicated space to share
concerns, and to get quality advice and ongoing support.
Sometimes just having someone to talk to is of great
importance.
Second to pain, cancer patients have told Macmillan that
their next biggest concern is financial. Over 90% of people
who receive a cancer diagnosis experience financial
difficulties.
Macmillan provides grants to people experiencing financial
difficulties as a result of their illness. Grants are given
to people who need them for a wide range of reasons. In the
past Macmillan Cancer Support has given grants to people to
fund a new washing machine, pay for taxi fares to hospital
or even to fund convalescent breaks.
Macmillan Cancer Support joined with Crossroads Dalriada
and The Isles in 2008 to launch The Kintyre and Mid Argyll
Cancer Care Project delivering quality social care and
support to cancer patients and their carers throughout Mid
Argyll and Kintyre.

MULTIPLE
SCLEROSIS CENTRE, MID-ARGYLL |
|

“
Supporting people in Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Isles
affected by Multiple Sclerosis and other debilitating
conditions”
Argyll has one of the highest rates of MS in the whole
world. 1 in 300 people have MS compared with the national
average of 1 in 700 with Scotland having the highest
incidence in the world. Recognising a desperate need for a
therapy centre in Mid Argyll our community raised the funds
to build this Centre in 1996.
We receive no government funding and continue to strive to
find the funds to remain open and deliver our valuable, much
needed services. We are grateful to all the members of our
community who already give their time voluntarily and
support our fundraising.
Community support has allowed us to grow and develop into
the ‘national award winning’ therapy centre we are today.
More help is needed to allow us to further our work in the
future.
We are open to all members of our community and beyond.
HELP US HELP YOU!
Please call in and meet our friendly staff, volunteers and
members. You may even benefit from one or more of the many
services we provide, please call in to see us for more
information.

The Argyll and
Bute Choose Life Initiative are enthusiastic supporters of the
MOK run. Project worker Tracy Preece says 'Suicide is a
significant problem in Scotland with more than 2 people every
day losing their lives in this way. Any of us can be at risk of
suicide given the circumstances; bereavement, divorce,
unemployment, etc are all situations that can lead to thoughts
of suicide. One of the best ways to protect ourselves from that
risk is to know what in life sustains and keeps us going when
times feel tough. Running is a great way to make friends and get
fit, both things that help our mental wellbeing'
MOKRUN endorse the Choose Life initative whole heartedly and
support their work in promoting health and well being in the
community and are pleased to help promote their work. |

Autism Argyll
10K
for 10 years!
Autism Argyll is a parent led charity which
provides support, information and advice to families
and professionals who live and work with individuals
on the autism spectrum in Argyll and Bute. The
group was formed in August 2000 by a small group of
parents and now has over 130 members throughout
Argyll & Bute and beyond.
|
 |
|
As part
of Autism Argyll’s 10th birthday celebrations, a
number of members are taking part in the Mull of
Kintyre 10K in Campbeltown on Sunday 30th May,
2010. They would be delighted if others would join
them on the day to help raise funds for the
organisation. |
|
Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder. All
people with autism have difficulties in three areas
*
Language and communication.
*
Social skills and relationships.
*
Thinking and behaving flexibly and creatively.
The
term ASD is used because individuals have a wide
range of disabilities, from those with complex and
profound disability to those with average or above
average intelligence. The diagnosis of Asperger's
syndrome is often given to those at the more able
end of the spectrum.
Autism Argyll provides the following:
*
Eclectic unbiased information on ASD.
*
Impartial and confidential telephone support.
* A
range of ASD specific talks and events.
*
Specialist books and videos which can be borrowed
from any Argyll & Bute library.

Teenage Cancer Trust
This morning 6 teenagers heard the words “you have
cancer”, 6 will hear it tomorrow and 6 the day
after. |
 |
If you’re a teenager and unlucky enough to be
diagnosed with cancer, chances are you’ll receive treatment
on a ward with very young children or elderly patients.
TCT funds specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals,
providing an environment where teenagers can get on with
being teenagers, an environment we hope will improve
survival rates and ensure a better future for patients and
their families. We have 8 units – we need another 14 to
reach every single young person with cancer in the UK. Why
not challenge yourself and run for TCT, to help raise funds
for these teenagers.
If you have any questions or would like more information
please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Spinal
Research
A spinal
cord injury could happen to any one of us - we are all
vulnerable to unexpected events like a serious fall,
road traffic accident or a sports injury. |
 |
Over 40,000
people in the UK alone are paralysed as a result of spinal
cord damage and the effects can be devastating. But there is
hope… Spinal Research is dedicated to finding ways to repair
damaged spinal cords and restore sensation and movement to
people paralysed by spinal injury. Ultimately our aim is to
end the terrible threat of permanent paralysis caused by a
spinal cord injury
